When you wake up each morning, you should feel refreshed and ready to handle whatever the day throws at you. Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors that can interfere with good mornings. For example, you might find that your jaw always hurts when you wake up. What can cause this issue, and is there anything you can do about it? This blog post provides some helpful information.

Teeth Grinding and Morning Jaw Soreness

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding and clenching, is one of the most common causes of morning jaw soreness. Many people engage in it during sleep, so they are totally unaware of what they are doing!  Unfortunately, bruxism puts a lot of stress on your teeth, facial muscles, and jaw.

If your partner has noticed grinding sounds coming from you at night, you might be bruxing! Other signs that you are afflicted by this problem include:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness upon waking
  • Frequent headaches, especially in the morning
  • Limited Opening ability
  • Worn or flattened teeth
  • Heightened tooth sensitivity
  • Clicking or popping sounds when moving the jaw
  • Recession of the Gums around the teeth.

TMJ Disorder and Its Relationship with Teeth Grinding

Temporomandibular joint disorder (also called TMJ disorder or TMD) is a condition that affects the hinge which connects the jawbone to the skull. This joint allows for the movements required for speaking, chewing, and yawning. When this joint becomes inflamed or misaligned, it can result in pain and difficulty with jaw function.

Teeth grinding and clenching is a common contributor to TMJ disorder, and TMD can also contribute to bruxism. These two issues can create a cycle of discomfort that is difficult to break free of!

Beyond bruxism and jaw soreness, other signs that you might have TMD include:

  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
  • Locking catching sensations in the jaw or limited jaw mobility
  • Ear pain, fullness or ringing, without infection
  • Unexplained headaches from mild to migraine type.

Finding Relief from TMD and Teeth Grinding

Seeking a doctor that specializes in TMJ/TMD is vital if you suspect that you have TMD or grind your teeth at night. An orthodontist with TMJ training and experience can provide an expert evaluation and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Some potential solutions for TMD include:

  • Custom intraoral orthotics that minimize grinding frequency and intensity of teeth grinding, that are worn only at night when you sleep.
  • Orthodontic devices to reduce muscle activity that will improve jaw alignment.
  • Home regimens to reduce stress on your muscles and provide pain relief

Frequent morning jaw soreness should not be ignored! Talk to a qualified expert specialist to learn how you can find relief.
