Two-phase orthodontics is used for children to treat crowding, spacing, cross bites, and over bites. Phase I will address these issues while utilizing growth. To start, your child should have some permanent teeth, but not all. The age of Phase I can vary depending on your child’s dental development and skeletal growth. Phase II consists of using orthodontic braces to align the teeth and bite.
Two-phase orthodontics can reduce or eliminate the need to extract permanent teeth when it is time for braces. Interceptive Phase I treatment can minimize some issues early, giving your child added confidence and comfort knowing that something is being done to help his or her dental problems.
Phase 1
We recommend Phase I treatment when your child’s dental issues cannot be managed totally with braces alone. By addressing crowding and tooth development early, we can improve the outcome of orthodontic treatment and can usually shorten the time in braces.
While it can be invaluable, not all children benefit from Phase I orthodontics. We have found over years of practice that only about 30% of children need Phase I interceptive treatment. If your child does not need early treatment, we will place them in observation to monitor growth, development, and tooth eruption.
Phase 2
The goal of the second phase is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this equilibrium is established, the teeth will function together properly.
The second phase begins when all permanent teeth have erupted, and usually involves full upper and lower braces. Retainers are worn after this phase to ensure your child retains his or her beautiful smile.
